Learn Dutch – About Taalthuis

At Taalthuis, you can register for Dutch courses at different levels. We offer both online and face-to-face courses in a classroom. We aim to make learning a fun experience!

Founded in 2006, Taalthuis has grown into a well-known language institute in the Netherlands for higher educated students. With lesson locations in six different cities in the Netherlands, Taalthuis makes it possible for expats, au pairs, and international students to learn Dutch all over the Netherlands.

Taalthuis uses its own course material for Beginners and Intermediate levels. During our courses, you will be exploring all kinds of interesting subjects and current topics. Each lesson takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. Besides the time you spend in the classroom, you will need to spend about 5 hours a week on homework. For the Advanced courses, you will need more time for homework.

Your e-learning is an important tool that helps you with vocabulary and pronunciation, challenging you with all sorts of exercises.

Read all about our different course levels below. If you are new at Taalthuis, or are unsure about your current level, Taalthuis offers level check consultation hours every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon between 1-5 pm on 023-3040023.

Beginners courses

To attend Beginners and Intermediate courses, you need to have a basic knowledge of the English language.

The Beginners basic course (A0>A1) teaches you the basics of the Dutch language in a fun and interactive way. Taalthuis emphasises your speaking skills so you will build the confidence to speak right from the start. If you attend and actively participate during classes, you will reach A1 level at the end of the course.

The Introduction (A0) course for au pairs makes it possible for au pairs to meet each other and share experiences. We teach them the essentials of the language. Au pairs meet each other in class once a week and often make friends for life whilst building a foundation of Dutch to communicate with their host family, and to use in daily life in the Netherlands.

Our Beginners plus course (A0>A2) is specially developed for native German and native Afrikaans-speaking students. This course has a higher level and has a higher pace than the Beginners Basic course. If you are not from Germany or South Africa or don’t have any knowledge of the Dutch language, you are advised to take the Beginners basic course. At the end of the course, you will reach A2-level if you actively participated.

Intermediate courses

The Intermediate course (A1>A2)  is usually the second course you take at Taalthuis. You will start noticing that simple conversations become a bit more complex, and you will expand your grammar knowledge, which helps you move forward, making longer sentences and allowing you to express yourself even better. For the Intermediate course (A1>A2), you must have finished a Beginners course at A1. If you are new to Taalthuis, you need to do an intake by phone. The goal is to reach A2-level at the end of the Intermediate course.

Advanced courses

For the Advanced course (A2>B1) you have to have finished a Beginners Plus or Intermediate course (A2). For the Advanced levels, Taalthuis uses the Coutinho method: “Nederlands in Actie“. Our goal is to keep stimulating you to speak, and to bring into practice all the grammar and vocabulary, which has grown substantially. You will become more and more confident using your Dutch in daily life.

The course is split into two courses of 14 weeks each: Advanced (A2-B1) part 1 and Advanced (A2-B1) part 2. If you are new to Taalthuis, you need to do an intake by phone to be admitted to the Advanced course. At the end of the course, if you actively participated, you will reach B1-level.

For the High Advanced course (B1>B2)  you have to have finished an Advanced course at B1. This course will help you expand your vocabulary and master complex sentences and grammar. You will become more and more fluent and at ease speaking Dutch.

The course is split into two courses of 14 weeks each: High Advanced (B1-B2) part 1 and High Advanced (B1-B2) part 2. If you actively participate and finish both parts of the course, you will reach B2-level.

If you don’t pass the exam you are advised to take a conversational course and practice on the e-learning platform before going to the next level. You will need to call us for an intake before you are admitted to the next level.

For the course To Perfection (B2-C1), you must have finished an advanced course at B2. This course helps you to perfect your Dutch comfortably, with even more vocabulary and grammar to reach a near-native level. If you actively participate, you will reach C1 level. This is the highest level Taalthuis offers.

Conversational courses

Apart from the courses above, Taalthuis offers conversational courses at A1, A2 and B1 levels. During these 8 lesson group courses, you will be able to intensively practice your speaking skills guided by an experienced teacher. Your group decides on topics to speak about.

If you are new to Taalthuis, unsure about your current level, or need advice on which course to take, call us during one of our Level check consultation hours. You can call us every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon between 1-5 pm on 023-3040023.
